We are the only Cyberknife center in the Seattle/Tacoma region. We first began treating with the Cyberknife platform in 2006, and the system has seen many updates and upgrades during that timeframe. With the addition of our Cyberknife S7 platform in March 2025, we have the most advanced treatment platforms for Stereotactic Radiosurgery and Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT), and the only platform that can allow for real-time tracking of tumor motion.
The Swedish Radiosurgery Center was one of the lead institutions of a 21-center clinical trial of early-stage prostate cancer treatment with Cyberknife. We have published our 5 and 10 year results. This data shows excellent control rates for patient treated with Cyberknife 5-fraction prostate treatment for low and intermediate risk patients.
There has also been a great deal of research in using SBRT to treat oligometastatic disease. This is when a patient has a small volume of metastatic cancer. Patients in this category have more favorable outcomes than patients with more widespread or bulky disease. Several Phase III and randomized trials.
In March of 2025, we installed the latest model Cyberknife S7. This modern machine has allowed us to now meet the need of our expanding SBRT program. We have continued to improve and refine the treatment protocols for many cancers. For example, with prostate cancer Cyberknife, we now can boost a dominant intra-prostatic nodule to a higher dose. Recent phase III data showed that adding this micro-boost to MRI visible tumors did indeed improve local control at 10 years without an increase in toxicity (Kerkmeijer et. al, J. Clin Oncol 39, 787-796 2021). In addition, several studies have shown that dose to the neurovascular bundles correlates with risk of developing erectile dysfunction with treatment. Therefore, most recently we have expanded our efforts to lower the dose received by the prostate neurovascular bundles. With our new technology and software, we have further lowered the dose to the neuromuscular bundles with our novel
protocol.
